A checking account can feel free until a statement shows a service charge, an ATM surcharge, or an overdraft fee. The useful comparison is what your own routine costs over time. A highly advertised account is not automatically the best checking account for someone who deposits cash, uses branches, or gets paid irregularly.
Start with several recent statements and add only bank-related fees, subtracting any refunds. Choose the closest monthly range below. A zero-fee month does not establish that every service is free, and a high-fee month does not mean you need to switch immediately; identify what produced the charges first.
Use recent statements to choose your usual monthly total after refunds, then review the account features most likely to affect that cost.
