The Highest Trade-In Offer May Not Leave You With the Most Money

A generous trade-in figure can feel like a discount on your next car. But the number means little until you also know the replacement vehicle’s price, fees and financing terms. The useful comparison is how the entire transaction changes your money and transportation, not which offer looks biggest on one line.

If you still have a loan, get a current payoff amount from the lender before negotiating. A trade offer below that amount leaves negative equity; moving the shortfall into another loan does not erase it. Whether you keep, trade or sell privately, begin with the same ownership records and a realistic plan for what comes next.
