A Bigger Tax Refund Does Not Always Mean You Paid Less Tax

A large tax refund can feel like a success, while a balance due can feel like something went wrong. Neither amount, by itself, tells you how much federal tax you owed for the year. The result also reflects withholding, estimated payments, and any refundable credits you qualify to claim.

Use the pattern that best describes your recent federal returns, with “large” and “small” based on your own budget. These categories cannot predict your next refund or establish eligibility for a tax benefit. State taxes are separate, and a filing extension generally gives more time to file, not more time to pay.

What usually happens when you file?

Choose the outcome that best describes your recent federal returns to review the next records and withholding questions to check.
